This is a research case study on my project with Live-in labs on understanding the lives of villagers by conducting research activities and coming up with a sustainable product for them.
What's this project about?
Live-in Labs is a multidisciplinary project where students of various departments of engineering are grouped together and are assigned a village. The problem statement was open ended - "To identify insights and pain points of the villagers to come up with a sustainable product".
The very first step to this is not going to the village itself, but understanding various principles of field research, knowing to talk to them and emphasize with them. We had a 2 week session on these where we learnt various activities of research such as User Interviews, AEIOU framework of observation, User Personas, Surveys etc. We also had a session on Human Centered Design approach to arrive at the solution.
Goal of the project
We had 2 visits to the village during 2 different time of the year - during the month of May and December. These 2 visits had 2 different goals.
visit 1 - Exploratory Phase. The goal was to conduct various research activities to and gather data for identifying the pain points and insights in bridging the gap between them.
visit 2 - Co-design Phase. The goal was to collaboratively come up with a solution to solve their pain points.
My role in this project was conducting all Research and Co-design activities that involved interacting with the villagers. This was because my team members had a language barrier. The Pre and Post research work were done collaboratively with all other team members.
I will give the gist of overall process and then will dive deep into every activity that was conducted.

Key Learnings from the research
Gain trust by not standing out, try to make them comfortable by being one among them.
You are not helping them out, Do not get into that attitude.
No incentive for the villagers
Not valuing the time of the villagers
Too many interviews, leads to unnecessary diversion from the goal.
